Commission Painting Process in 5 Steps

Are you interested in your own personalised painting? Or, are you hoping to gift a loved one a thoughtfully personalised artwork for a milestone event?

I’ve painted plenty a portraits for wedding presents, engagement gifts, birthdays, birthings, family portraits, anniversaries and more.

If you’re interested in arranging one, here are 5 simple steps how:

1. Confirm budget and turnaround time.

When someone initially reaches out to enquire about a commission painting one of the first things I confirm is a price. It can be a delicate topic for a lot of people and that’s why I like to be as transparent as possible from the outset. I do my best to accommodate for budgets where possible, and often offer alternatives such a different sizes / materials to best suit your budget.

Once a price point is agreed upon I’ll then confirm the turnaround time, this may vary depending on my schedule. If you’re ordering the piece as a gift, please ensure to place you’re order well in advance of the required date. The more notice the better!

I’ll then send through an invoice. I take a 50% deposit before making a start, this excludes the cost of shipping which is invoiced once complete with the remaining deposit. Shipping can either be arranged by yourself, or I can obtain courier quotes on your behalf.

2. Complete the checklist

Once the deposit has been paid and sizing locked in, I’ll send through a checklist of questions including;

  • What’s your spirit animal?

  • Favourite drink?

  • Desired colour palette?

  • What outfit are you wearing?

  • Do you want any text? If so, what text?

  • Etc. Etc.

Some people enjoy giving a lot of detail, others prefer to let me take creative reign. You can give me as little or as much information as you’d like. It’s entirely up to you.

Below is a video example (via TikTok) of a commission I painted for a wonderful client:

3. The Perfect Composition

After receiving the checklist back, the real fun begins. I sketch up a rough composition and share this with you. It’s a nice way to check in, ensure everyone is on the same page and that you’re happy with the direction. Once it’s all been checked off - the painting begins!

4. The Final Touches

Once the painting is complete (in my eyes), I’ll send a final picture through to see if you would like any updates, additions or changes. If and when you’re happy, I varnish the painting and prep it to be sent out or collected.

5. Invoice & Shipment

The final invoice (including shipping) is then sent. Once paid, the painting is packed with love and shipped to its new home!
